RNDr. Ladislav Červinka, DrSc.

Scientific Curriculum Vitae

Born in Vienna (Austria) August 19, 1935. He visited the English Grammar School in the years 1946-48 and later the famous La Guardia secondary school. He studied the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the Charles University in Praha (Czech Republic) in the years 1953-58. Then he started to work in the Institute of Technical Physics, renamed later to Institute of Solid State Physics and finally renamed to Institute of Physics of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (now Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

In the institute he has been the head of the Laboratory of Inhomogenous Structures, from 1985 the head of the Laboratory of the Structure of Non-Crystalline Materials. From the beginning of the year 2010 he is working in the Institute of Physics as an emeritus scientist.

In 1965 he received the PhD and in 1991 the DrSc. title. In the year 1985 he has been awarded the Prize of the Academy for his work on the structure of non-crystalline materials.

In the beginning of his scientific career (1958-1970) he has studied the structure of ferrites, (see papers [1] to [19]) especially in relation to the Jahn-Teller effect in manganese ferrites (local tetragonal distortions in cubic structure), see papers [2], [4], [8] to [11] and [[17]. Extremely fruitful in this direction was his collaboration with the group of prof. R. Hosemann (Fritz-Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society in Berlin), papers [14], [17] and [19]. After 1966 he started studies of the structure of non-crystalline materials, especially of the structure of oxide and chalcogenide glasses (see papers [19] to [37]), of amorphous carbon ([32], [35] and [39], of metallic glasses [61]. Interesting results brought his fruitful collaboration with prof. E.W. Fischer (Max-Plack Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz) on the structure of amorphous and glassy polymers ([40], [45], [50], [54], [58], [60] and [62]). With the group of prof. G. Dalba (University of Trento) he collaborated on studies of the structure of borate glasses, e,g, [59], [65] and [68] or on studies of special germanate glasses [70, 71].

His experimental methods were X-ray or neutron scattering, later he concentrated mainly on computer modelling of non-crystalline structures together with a theoretical calculation of X-ray or neutron scattering on the basis of appropriate non-crystalline models. His special interest was concentrated to the problem of medium-range ordering (MRO) in glasses and its connection with the first sharp scattering peak (FSSP). His modelling experiments of two-dimensional structures in combination with Fraunhofer diffraction (in collaboration with prof. J. Komrska (Institute of Physical Engineering, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Technical University, Brno, Czech Republic) contributed to a better understanding of the medium-range order in disordered structures.

Recently, in order to contribute to the knowledge of the structure of the early universe (380.000 years after the Big-Bang) he studied the transformation of the power spectrum of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) "relict" radiation on the basis of the transformation of its power spectrum into reciprocal spaces - a method based on close analogy with the structural analysis of disordered structures on the basis of Fourier transform, see [72]. Simultaneously he finished his studies of some past problems concerning the crystallization of CdAs2-based glasses [73]. Finally, he was invited to present his studies on the analysis of the CMB anisotropy spectrum in the 10th Chapter of the book New Insights into Physical Science [74].

On the basis of his studies of glass structure, mainly the study of medium-range order in disordered materials, he was invited to give review lectures on various conferences and meetings, i.e. 1978 in Pardubice, Czech Republic (Int. Conf. on Amorphous Semiconductors - [30]), 1982 in Bucharest, Romania (Int. Conf. on Amorphous Semiconductors - [34]), 1982 in Cambridge, UK (2nd Int. Conf. on the Structure of Non-Crystalline Materials - [37]), 1987 in Balaton-Szeplák (Int. Conf on Amorphous Semiconductors - [44]), 1988 in Oxnard, USA (4th Int. Conf. on the Structure of Non-Crystalline Materials - [48]), 1991 in Sendai, Japan (5th Int. Conf. on the Structure of Non-Crystalline Materials - [55]). For the 7th in Cagliari, Italy and 11th in Paris, France, Int. Conferences on the Structure of Non-Crystalline Materials he has been invited to present the Introductory Lectures, see [66] and [72]. He served also as a Chairman of the 6th (1994) and 10th (2006) Int. Conference on the Structure of Non-Crystalline Materials.

He was invited to long-term visits in the Fritz-Haber-Institute of the Max-Planck Gesellschaft in Berlin during 1968 and 1969, in the Max-Planck-Institute for Polymer-Research in Mainz during the years 1984, 1986 and 1988 and to the University of Trento in the years 1991 to 1994.

He is an author of 74 scientific publications, the total number of citations until 2021 is 860.

In the year 1992 he founded the firm ICARIS Ltd. Conference Management, which helped during the period 1994 to 2015 the scientific and industrial community in the organization of congresses, conferences, workshops and other meetings. During this time ICARIS organized about 85 events of various kinds (a list of the most important events may be found in the above citation.
